What hiring actually costs.

Mandatory employer contributions: CPP at 5.95% of pensionable earnings (matched dollar-for-dollar), employer EI at 1.4x the employee premium, plus provincial costs like Ontario EHT and WSIB or workers' comp. Together these land around 10 to 14% of salary depending on province and payroll size. Health and dental premiums, employer retirement matching (RRSP or pension), and life and disability coverage. Typically 8 to 15% of salary, driven by plan quality and whether retirement matching is offered. Vacation, statutory holidays, and sick days are paid time when no work gets done. Two weeks vacation plus about nine statutory holidays is roughly 8% of working days, before any sick leave. Laptop and equipment, software licenses and seats, workspace or remote stipend, and IT and admin support. Highly role-dependent; 10% is a conservative all-in baseline for a knowledge worker. Job board fees or recruiter commission (often 15 to 25% of first-year salary), plus hiring-manager time and weeks of reduced output during ramp. Amortized across the first year, it adds up fast.
